Chrysanthemum Flower FAQs

What does a chrysanthemum flower symbolise?

The chrysanthemum flower meaning depends a little on where you are. In many places, it stands for happiness, long life, and good luck. In Australia, it’s also a go-to choice for Mother’s Day, thanks to its 'mum' nickname. At the same time, white chrysanthemums often carry a softer, more reflective tone. This makes them a popular choice for sympathy bouquets, too.

Do chrysanthemums flower all year round throughout Australia?

Not quite. Chrysanthemums are naturally in bloom through autumn here in Australia, usually around late March to May. You’ll see them everywhere in the lead-up to Mother’s Day. However, with modern growing techniques and greenhouse supply, you can still get fresh chrysanthemums from good florists for most of the year. But if you want a particular colour or variety, autumn is likely to be your best bet for peak quality and choice.

How long do your chrysanthemum flower bouquets last?

Chrysanthemum flowers have a reputation for going the distance. With a little care, you can expect your bouquet to stay looking fresh for at least 7 to 10 days, sometimes even longer. Just make sure you trim the stems, change the water every couple of days, and keep the flowers away from direct sunlight or heaters. In return, they'll reward you with bright, lively blooms that last and last.

Are chrysanthemums considered to be a funeral flower?

In many cultures, yes. White chrysanthemums in particular are often used in funeral flowers and sympathy arrangements. This is because they can symbolise honour, remembrance, and a life well lived. However, in Australia, they’re very versatile. You’ll also see them in happy bouquets for Mother’s Day or birthdays. It mostly comes down to the colour you choose and the message you send with them.
