Are you a Rainbow Roses Person?

Rainbow roses are one of our most popular selling flowers. So much so, we have dedicated an entire page on our website to these multi coloured beauties. And deservedly so.

Inspired by Willy Wonka and magical unicorns, these super fun and super bright rainbow roses are the bomb.

Dyed in a myriad of candy colours including blue, pink, purple and yellow, rainbow roses are perfect for people who have a cheeky disposition and a twinkle in their eye.

Rainbow Roses

They can be a little polarising amongst rose fans though. Some folks are purists, who believe a rose should remain as nature intended. And we TOTALLY get that.

BUT THERE IS A PLACE FOR RAINBOW ROSES IN THE WORLD.

Personality Profile: Rainbow Roses

Rainbow roses are for people who love to dream big dreams. Who laugh out loud at themselves, and don’t take life too seriously.

Rainbow roses are for people who love colour, and lots of it. They like to believe magic exists in the world.

Rainbow roses are for people who walk a little on the wild side. Don’t conform to set boundaries and social expectations. Are like a ray of sunshine when they enter a room.

Battle of the Florists: Starring Daffodils and Jonquils

Welcome to our latest Flowers for Everyone Battle of the Florists design challenge! The star of this month’s floral design challenge are daffodils and jonquils. We love these cheery little flowers filling our stores with their beauty and fragrance at the moment (insert happy dance)!

What better way to lift the spirits during winter than a bunch of happy yellow daffodils or creamy, perfumed jonquils?

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE

Our Balgowlah and Sydney CBD stores have gone up against each other this month, with one design condition – the daffodils or jonquils must be the star of their flower arrangement.

Have your say! VOTE for your favourite design here and go into the draw to win a $50 gift certificate with Flowers for Everyone (valid for Sydney metro deliveries or store pick only folks!).

SYDNEY CBD ENTRY

Our Sydney CBD team have decided to go for gold and cast daffodils as the solo star of their entry. This gorgeous glass terrarium-style flower arrangement is a super stylish way to showcase a ball of bright daffodils. Tucked in a bed of green moss, these daffodils are perfectly styled for a mantlepiece or hall entrance feature. We love this design not only for its simplicity, but for the added bonus of the vase, a beautiful addition to the home long after the daffodils have faded.

BALGOWLAH ENTRY

An entirely different take on the design theme, the Flowers for Everyone Balgowlah florist crew have chosen jonquils as their star. This beautiful winter flower arrangement uses poppies and freesias to offset their buttery jonquils, with a frill of nandina foliage adding extra depth and warmth. Love the white pitcher and flourish of hessian ribbon – its rustic charm is sure to win a few votes!

PREVIOUS BATTLE WINNER

Congratulations to the Flowers for Everyone Sydney CBD store who won the last battle against our Rouse Hill shop with this gorgeous arrangement! Will they be able to hold onto their title this month?

ON DAFFODILS AND JONQUILS…

We dug around in the blog archives and found this beauty of an article, ‘The Naughty Narcisuss”. Did you know that Narcissus flowers provide the perfume world’s most ‘naughty notes’?

“Described as sultry, rich, and earthy, its fragrance is almost a little sharp, with a ‘green’ animalic scent and traces of hyacinth and jasmine. A bit naughty smelling, the narcissus is worn by those not afraid to wear a perfume that makes a statement…”

Not everyone is familiar with the term Narcisuss. So allow us to brush you up on the lingo. The cultivated narcissus come in three different varieties:

The Daffodil: Featuring four to six flattened, grass-like leaves and a flower stalk bearing asingle flower with a long, trumpet like ‘corona’.

The Jonquil: Featuring two to four narrow, cylindrical, rush-like leaves and a flower stalk bearing two to six relatively small flowers with short ‘coronas’.

The Narcissus: Similar to daffodils, but its flattened flower stalk bears four to eight flowers with short ‘coronas’.

We hope you are more enlightened by our Narcissus trivia!

Hydrangeas on Manly’s Shelly Beach

Flowers for Everyone recently held a ‘Battle of the Florists’ among two of its retail stores. Our Balgowlah team had a beach theme with the design condition of incorporating ornamental kale.

The girls went all out, photographing their stunning floral arrangement on Manly’s Shelly Beach. Plenty of passers by stopped to comment on how gorgeous it was, but one of our Facebook fans took it a step further, and, after seeing the photo on our page, painted the most amazing still life of the flowers.

Battle of the Florists
The original photo taken on Manly’s Shelly Beach, featuring ornamental kale, hydrangea, Scottish thistle, Eucalyptus foliage and monsteria leaves.

Curiousity piqued, we checked out Terri’s portfolio listed on Redbubble and were wowed. An accountant by day, Terri’s humble confession to art and textiles being a ‘sideline’ is understating her talent.

About Terri

How long have you been painting for?

I studied art at high school & part-time evening at TAFE (over 30 years ago, how embarrassing!). I started again 9 years ago after children etc & have really enjoyed being able to focus on painting again – mostly with pastels & oils.

How did you learn how to paint?

I started back at art learning pastel painting with Bernard Devaux at Forestville Community Art Centre.  Bernard is a wonderful artist & our group at Forestville was great.  Since moving to Bonny Hills on the Mid north coast in December 2013, I’ve been painting with the Hastings Valley Fine Art Assoc & enjoy plain air (outdoors) painting on a Monday morning the most. We have a gallery in Port Macquarie overlooking Oxley Beach where I exhibit.

What is your favourite flower?

Roses are my favourite flower – doesn’t matter what colour, although I do like the old fashioned roses that have a beautiful perfume the best.

How can people buy your art?

My original artworks are available from my home studio in Bonny Hills, as well as the Hastings Fine Art Gallery in Port Macquarie. Redbubble has a portfolio of paintings that are available as prints & other merchandise, with the descriptions indicating if the original has been sold.

Terri can be contacted via email at bonnyviewstudio@gmail.com if you are interested in her work.

We are so glad Terri spotted our photograph on Facebook and took inspiration from it to produce such a gorgeous painting. Thanks Terri for sharing!

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for the next #battleoftheflorists competition announcement and the chance to win a $50 gift certificate with Flowers for Everyone!

5 Ways to Decorate your Home with Roses

Love the look of roses in your home? Don’t bother waiting for someone to buy them for you. One simple bunch of fresh roses each week shouldn’t be considered a luxury. A standard bunches of roses (as is, not arranged as a bouquet) from your local florist usually averages around $20. These bunches nearly always come in stems of ten, and are available in a variety of lengths ranging from around 20cm upwards (the shorter the length, the cheaper the bunch).

Roses are one flower that really add a luxe vibe to the home. But not everyone is a natural floral stylist. Below are some of our favourite styling and decorating ideas for roses in the home that anyone can do. But first….you must prepare your flowers to ensure maximum longevity.

PREPARING YOUR ROSES

First of all, remove any thorns or leaves from the section of stem that will be sitting in water (usually 1/3 to 1/2 from the base of the stem). If the rose has lots of tiny little thorns, use an old teatowel in your hands as protection, then holding the rose gently below its head, use the other hand to run the teatowel down the stem. This will remove all the tiny thorns without pricking your skin. Otherwise use a sharp pair of secataurs to snip off those gnarly thorns!

Then using your secataurs, trim 1-2 cm off the end of the rose stem at an angle, make sure your vase or pot has been cleaned with warm soapy water, then fill with fresh cold tapwater.

DECORATING THE HOME WITH ROSES

  1. That ol’ Yarn

Take balls of natural string and arrange them on an occassional table. Place a short shot glass (or similar) in the centre of the spool. Cut one to three rose heads down so their heads sit just above the twine. Add a spring of greenery from your garden if you wish.

2. Painted Mason Jars

This idea isn’t only exclusive to stylish brides for decorating their wedding tables. Get hold of plain glass mason jars from a $2 shop and paint them with a can of spray paint in your favourite colour. Arrange a ‘grouping’ of jars in identical sizes along a window sill or mantlepiece and divide your roses evenly between. Voila, your room will look just like the pages from a Home Beautiful magazine.

3. The Humble Tin

Short tins, tall tins, modern coffee tins, Twinings tea tins, vintage soap and biscuit tins. Easily accesible and economical. If using a short squat tin, cut your stems down so the heads sit just above the rim and work in odd numbers when arranging roses (the natural foliage of the stem will help support their position). Alternatively place your roses in a medium to tall tin and make sure your stem height is at least the 1 x times the height again.

4. Antique Pewter Jugs

Hunt around for an antique pewter jug or teapot in second hand stores. Cut your stems short to sit sweetly in a little jug or place them in a larger vessel. Look for bunches of roses that still have plenty of healthy green leaves on them, as the foliage will help to fill spaces and assist your roses to behave beautifully.

5. Bottled Roses

This is so easy to do and gives a designer look to your home. Create a display of short and/or tall clear or coloured glass bottles and put a rose stem in each one. Stagger their position and create variance with different height stems. Ideal for when a rose head breaks off – just pop it in a tiny bottle and continue to enjoy!
